- For the preparation of inks, perfumes, fumigants, moisturizers, softeners, plasticizers, explosives and pharmaceutical chiral carriers, etc.
- Its oxidation products 3-hydroxybutanone and diacetyl can be used as flavorants
- Because of its high calorific value (27 200kJ/kg), it is equivalent to ethanol (29 055kJ/kg) and methanol (22 081kJ/kg), so it can be used as a fuel additive.
- Used as intermediates in medicine and pesticides
- In China, it has also been added to white wine to improve the flavor of white wine.
